First—take a deep breath. Casting days are hard, sometimes harder for the parents than for the kids. It’s completely normal for your child (and you) to feel upset, disappointed, or even a little heartbroken if the role they dreamed of didn’t come their way. That doesn’t mean they’re not talented. It doesn’t mean they weren’t seen. It means in this one puzzle of a show, the pieces had to fit together a certain way. It’s also important to remember that theatre is not just about one role—it’s a team sport. Just like in soccer or basketball, not everyone plays the same position every time, but everyone contributes to the win. In theatre, the “win” is the joy of telling a story together, of building confidence, of learning resilience, of being part of something larger than yourself. So how do you walk through this with your child?
